- Detailed Explanation: This is one of the most common and important questions in any Korean job interview: “지원 동기가 무엇입니까?” (What is your reason for applying?).
지원(jiwon) means ‘application’ or ‘support’, and동기(donggi) means ‘motivation’. It’s your chance to show your passion and explain why you are the perfect fit for the company and the role. This is a formal expression used in professional settings.
2. 역량을 발휘하다 (Yeongnyangeul Balhwihada)
- Korean: 역량을 발휘하다 (yeongnyangeul balhwihada)
- Pronunciation [Romanization]: [yeongnyangeul balhwihada]
- English Meaning: To demonstrate/showcase one’s capabilities
- Detailed Explanation: This is a powerful phrase to express your confidence and skills.
역량(yeongnyang) means ‘capability’ or ‘competence’, and발휘하다(balhwihada) is a verb that means ‘to display’ or ‘to exert’. You can use this to say something like, “이곳에서 제 역량을 발휘하고 싶습니다” (I want to demonstrate my capabilities here). It sounds much more professional than just saying “I can do a good job.”
3. 미래 지향적인 (Mirae Jihyangjeogin)

- English Meaning: Future-oriented
- Detailed Explanation: This adjective is perfect for describing yourself or a company in a high-tech field.
미래(mirae) means ‘future’, and지향적(jihyangjeok) means ‘oriented’. When you describe yourself as a미래 지향적인 인재(injae – talent/person), you’re saying you are a forward-thinking individual who is ready for future challenges. -
💡 Pronunciation Tip: The “M” Sound Change!
Let’s look at the common interview question, “지원 동기가 무엇입니까?” (mueos-imnikka?).
Notice the last word, 입니까. It’s written with aㅂ(b) sound at the end of입. However, when a consonant likeㅂ(b/p) is followed by a nasal sound likeㄴ(n) orㅁ(m), theㅂ(b) changes to a softㅁ(m) sound to make the pronunciation smoother!- Written: ip-ni-kka
- Pronounced: [im-ni-kka]
This rule, called nasalization (비음화), is super common. You’ll hear it in words like감사합니다(gamsahamnida), which is pronounced [감사함니다]. Practice this, and you’ll sound incredibly natural!
