Key Expressions

Here are 3 essential expressions to use when you have to break bad news about a borrowed item.

1. 큰일 났어. (Keunil nasseo.)

• English Meaning: I’m in trouble / Oh no / Something happened.
• Detail: Before you say exactly what happened, use this phrase to set the mood. It warns the listener that there is a problem. You can use this with close friends. To be polite/formal, say “큰일 났어요 (Keunil nasseoyo).”
• 💡 Pronunciation Tip:
  • It is NOT pronounced [keun-il nat-seo].
  • It sounds like [Keunnil nasseo].
  • Why? This is a compound word (큰 big + 일 event). When a word ending in a consonant is followed by ‘이(i)’ or ‘야(ya)’, an ‘ㄴ(n)’ sound is often inserted. Also, the bottom ㅅ in 났 sounds like t, but before 어, it links naturally as ss.
  • Say it with a worried face: [Kkeun-nil-la-sseo].

2. 실수로 망가뜨렸어. (Silsuro mang-gatteuryeosseo.)

• English Meaning: I broke/ruined it by mistake.
• Detail:
  • 실수로 (Silsuro) = by mistake.
  • 망가뜨렸어 (Manggatteuryeosseo) = broke/ruined (active verb).
  • This clearly admits that it was your fault but emphasizes that it wasn’t intentional.
• 💡 Pronunciation Tip:
  • Pay attention to ‘뜨 (tteu)’.
  • Korean has “Tense Sounds” (Double Consonants) like ㄲ, ㄸ, ㅃ, ㅆ, ㅉ. You need to tense your mouth and throat to make a strong, sharp sound, almost like a bird pecking. It is not soft like the English ‘d’ or ‘t’.
  • Pronounce it strongly: [Mang-ga-TTEU-ryeo-sseo].

3. 똑같은 걸로 사 줄게. (Ttokgateun geollo sa julge.)

• English Meaning: I will buy you the exact same one.
• Detail: This is the “Korean style” solution! Instead of just saying sorry, offering to replace the item immediately shows sincerity.
  • 똑같은 것 (Ttokgateun geot) = The exact same thing.
• 💡 Pronunciation Tip:
  • ‘걸로 (geollo)’: Originally 것 (geot) + 으로 (euro). In spoken Korean, it shortens to 걸로.
  • Look at the [ll] sound. When ㄹ meets another ㄹ, it creates a flowing, long ‘L’ sound.
  • Also, 똑 is a tense sound [ttok].
  • Try saying it smoothly: [Ttok-ka-teun geol-lo sa jul-ge].
