Everyone looks at you. You didn’t press “Reserve” (예약 – Yeyak); you pressed “Start” (시작 – Sijak).
We’ve all been there. The Korean karaoke remote is like a spaceship control panel—hundreds of buttons, all in Korean. Today, we are going to master the art of the “Reserve Button” so you can become the most popular person in the room (or at least avoid being the party pooper!).

1. 예약할게요 (I’ll reserve this)
- Pronunciation: [Yeyak-hal-ge-yo]
- Sound Tip: ‘Ye’ sounds like ‘Yeah’, ‘Yak’ sounds like ‘Yak’ (the animal). ‘Hal’ sounds like ‘Hull’.
- Meaning: “I will make a reservation” (Literal) → “I’m adding this to the queue” (Real nuance).
- Editor’s Insight: This is the magic phrase. In Korea, we don’t just interrupt; we queue. Saying this aloud notifies others that you are claiming the next spot, but you respect the current singer.
- Situation Check: ✅ Casual (Friends) | ✅ Formal (Co-workers/Boss)
2. 이거 취소해 주세요 (Please cancel this)
- Pronunciation: [I-geo Chwi-so-hae Ju-se-yo]
- Sound Tip: ‘Chwi’ is tricky. Purse your lips like you’re blowing a kiss, then say ‘Chee’.
- Meaning: “Please do a cancellation of this.”
- Editor’s Insight: You will pick the wrong song eventually. Maybe you picked the 10-minute live version instead of the radio edit. Use this phrase immediately to ask the person holding the remote to help you out.

3. 우선 예약 (Priority Reservation)
- Pronunciation: [U-seon Yeyak]
- Sound Tip: ‘U’ like ‘Oo’ in moon. ‘Seon’ sounds like ‘Sun’.
- Meaning: Priority Booking.

Let’s look at how B1 level students speak versus how locals actually speak in the loud, echoey karaoke room.

Phase 4: Cultural Context (Nunchi 101)
In a Noraebang, Nunchi (눈치) is everything.
- The “Start” Button Taboo: Never, ever press ‘시작’ (Start) while someone else is singing. It stops their song immediately. Always look for the ‘예약’ (Reserve) button. It is usually smaller and located at the bottom or side of the remote.
- The “Verse 1” Rule: If you are with a large group (especially co-workers), it is good manners to press ‘간주 점프’ (Jump Intro/Interlude) if the instrumental break is too long. Time is money!
- Booking Etiquette: Don’t book 5 songs in a row. Book one, let two people go, then book another. We call this “mic hogging,” and it’s a quick way to lose friends.
Phase 5: Real Scenario (Roleplay)
Setting: A Friday night Noraebang in Gangnam. You (Foreigner) and Min-ji (Korean Friend).
(Min-ji finishes singing a ballad. Everyone claps.)

Phase 6: 10-Second Shadowing
Let’s practice asking for help before you press the wrong button. Read this naturally, pausing at the / marks.
“혹시 / 제 노래가 / 예약됐나요?”

Focus Point: Raise your intonation slightly at the end (-na-yo?) to sound polite and inquisitive.
Phase 7: FAQ (Troubleshooting)
- Q: Can I sing the same song someone else just sang?
- A: Generally, No. Unless it’s a very famous anthem (like ‘Gangnam Style’) that everyone wants to scream together, singing a song someone else just performed is considered stealing their thunder.
- Q: Is it okay to look at my phone while others sing?
- A: Try to avoid it. Grab a tambourine (템버린) and shake it! Showing enthusiasm for others is part of the Noraebang culture.
Phase 8: Wrap-up
